I enjoy learning spiritual pondering on the Word (Yeshua) of YHWH on Exodus 23 Chapter.
This is for Parashah 18: Mishpatim (Rulings) 21:1-24:18 soon we all read 3 more weeks to go reading on this scripture verses on February 22, 2020 (27th of Sh’vat, 5780).
Exodus 23:20-26 TLV
20 “Behold, I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and to bring you into the place that I have prepared. 21 Watch for Him and listen to His voice. Do not rebel against Him because He will not pardon your transgression, for My Name is in Him. 22 But if you listen closely to His voice, and do everything I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries. 23 For My angel will go before you, and bring you to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and the Jebusites, and I will cut them off. 24 You are not to bow down to their gods or serve them, or do what they do. Rather, you are to utterly overthrow them, and break their pillars in pieces. 25 You are to serve Adonai your God (YHWH your Elohim), and He will bless your food and your water. Moreover I will take sickness away from your midst. 26 None will miscarry nor be barren in your land, and I will fill up the number of your days.
So I re-read comparing CJB on Exodus 23:20-33:
(vi) 20 “I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared. 21 Pay attention to him, listen to what he says and do not rebel against him; because he will not forgive any wrongdoing of yours, since my name resides in him. 22 But if you listen to what he says and do everything I tell you, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes. 23 When my angel goes ahead of you and brings you to the Emori, Hitti, P’rizi, Kena‘ani, Hivi and Y’vusi, I will make an end of them. 24 You are not to worship their gods, serve them or follow their practices; rather, you are to demolish them completely and smash their standing-stones to pieces.
25 “You are to serve Adonai your God; and he will bless your food and water. I will take sickness away from among you. (vii) 26 In your land your women will not miscarry or be barren, and you will live out the full span of your lives. 27 I will send terror of me ahead of you, throwing into confusion all the people to whom you come; and I will make all your enemies turn their backs on you. 28 I will send hornets ahead of you to drive out the Hivi, Kena‘ani and Hitti from before you. 29 I will not drive them out from before you in one year, which would cause the land to become desolate and the wild animals too many for you. 30 I will drive them out from before you gradually, until you have grown in number and can take possession of the land. 31 I will set your boundaries from the Sea of Suf to the sea of the P’lishtim and from the desert to the [Euphrates] River, for I will hand the inhabitants of the land over to you, and you will drive them out from before you. 32 You are not to make a covenant with them or with their gods. 33 They are not to live in your land; otherwise they will make you sin against me by ensnaring you to serve their gods.”
Andrew G. Roth have excellent view on Exodus 23:20-21:
HIFNEH ANOCHI SHOLEACH MALACH LEFANYECHA LISHMORCHAH BA- DERECH VELAHAVIACHA EL-HA-MAKOM ASHER HACHINOTI (23:20) = Behold I will send a Messenger from before your face guard you on your way and bring you to the place that I have prepared. So begins the description of Yeshua the Mashiyach in pre-incarnate form. Note how he is to “guard your way” because Messiah is the way, truth and the life. And the place that Abba YHWH has prepared, the same word CHANOKH means “dedicated” from where we get the feast of Hanukkah and the man named Enoch.
HISHAMER MIPANAV USHMA VIKOTO VE’ASITA KOL ASHER ADEBER VEAYAVTI ET-OVEYCHA VETSARTI ET-TSOREYCHA (23:21) = Guard yourself in his presence and heed his voice. Do not rebel against him, since My Name is in him. He will not pardon your disobedience.
This is key: no angel can independently forgive sin, but the Son of Man does have authority on earth to forgive sins normally. Therefore this “angel” cannot be “ordinary” in that sense because there is no reason to even bring the matter up unless the angel could forgive sin and normally would do so, but he is under orders not to in this case should Israel rebel. That specialness of this “angel” is further explained by the next line, “for My Name is in him” because all angels have EL— the title of Elohim in their names but only the Son of Yah has YAH in his name, which makes him superior to the angels (Hebrews 1:1-5).
On a related note for this verse, Targum Onkelos, apparently aware of the potential Messianic associations, changes the line to read since he speaks in My Name rather than the Torah original reading of for My Name is in Him. The alteration though simply substitutes one problem for another, for while the new reading avoids the idea that this Messenger has special powers and authority over all other messengers, it then turns around and suggests the other extreme, i.e. that every angel can forgive sin independently. Also the phrase makes no sense “for he speaks in My name” because all messengers, by definition, speak in His Name and the Israelites knew that and knew that this was a Messenger, leaving little to no reason to mention this messenger in the first place. 1 At many times and in many ways, God spoke long ago to the fathers through the prophets. 2 In these last days He has spoken to us through a Son,[a] whom He appointed heir of all things and through whom He created the universe. 3 This Son is the radiance of His glory and the imprint of His being, upholding all things by His powerful word.[b] When He had made purification for our sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. [c] 4 Thus He became as far above the angels as the name He has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
5 For to which of the angels did God ever say,
“You are My Son.
Today I have become Your Father”?[d]
And again,
“I will be to Him a Father,
and He will be to Me a Son”?[e]
6 And again, when He brings the firstborn into the world, He says,
“Let all the angels of God worship Him.”[f]
7 And regarding the angels He says,
“He makes His angels winds,
and His servants a flame of fire.”[g]
8 But regarding the Son He says,
“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,
and a scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your Kingdom.
9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;
therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness above Your companions.”[h]

“In the beginning, Adonai,
You laid the foundation of the earth,
and the heavens are the works of Your hands.
11 They shall pass away, but You remain.
And they will all wear out like clothing.[i]
12 And like a robe You will roll them up,
and like clothing they will be changed;
but You are the same,

13 But to which of the angels has He ever said,
14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out for service to those about to inherit salvation?

Exodus 3:13-15 CJB
13 Moshe said to God, “Look, when I appear before the people of Isra’el and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you’; and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what am I to tell them?” 14 God said to Moshe, “Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh[I am/will be what I am/will be],” and added, “Here is what to say to the people of Isra’el: ‘Ehyeh [I Am or I Will Be] has sent me to you.’” 15 God said further to Moshe, “Say this to the people of Isra’el: ‘Yud-Heh-Vav-Heh [Adonai], the God of your fathers, the God of Avraham, the God of Yitz’chak and the God of Ya‘akov, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever; this is how I am to be remembered generation after generation.
