Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) 2020 in Israel will begin in the evening of Monday, April 20 and ends in the evening of Tuesday, April 21.
Yom Hashoah is a day set aside for Jews to remember the Holocaust. The name comes from the Hebrew word “shoah”, which means “whirlwind”. Yom Hashoah was established in Israel in 1959 by law. Â It falls on the 27th of the Jewish month of Nisan/Nissan, a date chosen because it is the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.
Yom HaShoah, also known as Yom Hashoah VeHagevurah, literally means the “day of remembrance of the Catastrophe and the Heroism.” Â It is commemorated on the 27th day in the month of Nisan/Nissan. Â The observance is held one week after the seventh day of Passover. Â It also falls one week before Yom Hazikaron, the memorial day for Israel’s fallen soldiers.
