“The Hebrew form of her name is miryam [or myriam].” This name was used in the Old Testament to denote the only sister of Moses.

Prayer to Mary is memory of the great mysteries of our faith (Incarnation, Redemption through Christ in the rosary), praise to God for the wonderful things he has done in and through one of his creatures (Hail Mary) and intercession (second half of the Hail Mary). Roman Catholicism does not hold or teach this belief. Mary is honored as the mother of Christ, but Paragraph 971 of the “Catechism of the Catholic Church states that Mary is not to be adored or worshipped as are God the Father, the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ.
