Feast of Memorial of Saint Athanasius, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

My favorite holiday is Chanukkah/Hanukkah 2023 starts at nightfall on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023, which is when the first candle is lit.

Chanukah (Hanukkah) 2023 starts at nightfall on December 7, 2023 and ends with nightfall on December 15, 2023, beginning on the Hebrew calendar date of 25 Kislev, and lasting for 8 days.

The feast of the Dedication (Festival of Lights (or Feast of Lights) was taking place in Jerusalem.

Hanukkah, (Hebrew: “Dedication”) also spelled Ḥanukka, Chanukah, or Chanukkah, also called Feast of Dedication, Festival of Lights, or Feast of the Maccabees, Jewish festival that begins on Kislev 25 (usually in December, according to the Gregorian calendar) and is celebrated for eight days.

  • This feast commemorates an episode in Jewish history (cf. 1 Mac 4:36-59; 2 Mac 1-2, 19; 10:1-8) when Judas Maccabeus, in the year 165 B.C., after liberating Jerusalem from the control of the Seleucid kings of Syria, cleansed the Temple of the profanations of Antiochus Epiphanes (1 Mac 1:54).
    • From then onwards, on the twenty-fifth day of the month of Kislev (November-December) and throughout the following week, all Judea celebrated the anniversary of the dedication of the new altar.
  • It was also known as the “festival of lights” because it was customary to light lamps,a symbol of the Law, and put them in the windows of the houses (cf. 2 Mac 1:18).

  • This below photo at sunset we begin to lit candles for 8 nights The Menorah actually have nine lights because the middle light is called the Shamash, and it is used to light the other eight candles. Each night we light the candle at the right end of the menorah. We do this for eight nights until all of the candles are lit. Tradition says that the Chanukkah/Hanukkah lights should burn for half an hour after nightfall. Jews were commanded to put the Menorah in a front window or by a doorway so all would see it.
